Mentoring has been identified as
the single most effective means of positively influencing the future of
a child.
- Traditional Program: Big Sisters of Rhode Island welcomes
the opportunity to interview women who are at least 19 years of age
who would like to bring a little magic in the life of a girl between
ages 7 and 15. (A Little Sister may remain in the program until age
18 or graduation from high school.) The initial commitment is one
year with regular visits (weekly or bi-weekly depending on what
works for the pair) of three-to-four hours.
How do I Volunteer to be a Big Sister?
- New Tools for Living - Mentoring Girls in the Rhode
Island Training School: In its first year of development, New
Tools for Living seeks women who are at least 25 years old as Big
Sisters for girls incarcerated in the Rhode Island Training School.
The program mission is to establish a special friendship that will
help the teen rejoin the community as the Big Sister provides
positive, new experiences - new tools for living a life with a
better future. The Big Sister is matched with a girl who is within
three-to-six months from release. Initially, the pair meet regularly
for an hour or two at the girls division of the training school.
Upon the teen's release, the pair continue their friendship within
the community, enjoying the full benefits of a Big/Little match.
